Baia Nicchia Farm and Nursery
We are an organic farm and nursery that opened for business in 2005. Initially, we were strictly a tomato seedling nursery specializing in cool-tolerant tomato varieties, which we sold exclusively at farmers’ markets. We started farming at the Sunol AgPark in 2006, and since then our farming business has expanded and become our main focus. Between 2006 and 2010 we have increased our acreage from ½ acre to 9.5 acres.
We produce a variety of unique, organic produce for local markets. Currently, tomatoes are our most significant product, and our unique position in the marketplace is bolstered by our ability to breed tomatoes with novel flavors and shapes for high-end Bay Area markets.
We supply fresh produce to local farmers’ markets and wholesale markets in the Bay Area. We also work closely with the chefs at collaborating restaurants and at Taste Catering. We sell seedlings and herb starts at farmers’ markets and at a farm stand in Sunol. Our unique tomato varieties are entering into the national marketplace via Seeds Of Change.
In 2010 we are adding both a winter and summer CSA. Our summer CSA features our tomatoes, peppers, squash and melons — with many other crops playing a minor role. We offer both large and small shares. The summer CSA is critical for our financial stability, so please spread the word (particularly to tomato and pepper lovers). We have drop points in Berkeley, Menlo Park, San Francisco and Sunol. Our CSAs also feature our deepening collaborations with the chefs at Marche, Sea Salt and Wente Vineyards. The chefs from these restaurants provide recipes for our CSA members, and they suggest new varieties for us to grow!
We collaborate with a variety of schools, including Hayward Unified School District, Sunol Glen Elementary and Marin Elementary in Albany. We also have a 120-hour internship program.
