Public & Farmers’ Markets
SAGE’s staff has considerable expertise in the arena of public markets and farmers’ markets, based on many years of experience planning and managing them. SAGE president and founder, Sibella Kraus created the acclaimed San Francisco Ferry Plaza Farmers’ Market.
SAGE has been asked to consult on the establishment and design of new public and farmers’ markets nationwide - including Portland Public Market, Fruitvale Market, the Detroit Eastern Market and the Santa Rosa Railroad Square Market. We have produced individually granted projects about farmers’ markets in general, and have been asked to present at public and farmers’ market conferences.
Eastern Market, Detroit (2006-07): consultation with Projects for Public Spaces on the development of an outreach plan to re-establish Detroit’s Eastern Market as a destination for farm fresh seasonal produce, a year-round provider of quality foods and a center for food systems education.
New Railroad Square (2006-07): consultation with Creative Housing Associates on the vision and concept for new public market, as the centerpiece for a proposed transit oriented development in Santa Rosa.
Farmers Market Resource Kit: a Step Toward Making San Francisco a Market City (2005), a guide to farmers’ market history, policies, governance, operations, and educational programs, produced to help city agencies, policymakers, and neighborhood groups better understand the role of markets in San Francisco.
