Public Education & Outreach

Part of SAGE’s mission is to engage the public in sustainable agriculture. As we document and demonstrate the vital connections between land, resources, food and people, we inspire people to reclaim local food and natural resources.

SAGE achieves this through grant-funded projects to educate certain audiences about food and farming. We work with agencies, researchers, schools, youth and families, and provide services from school curriculums to annual fairs and events.

California Agricultural Atlas

SAGE is proposing to lead a public-private partnership to develop a California Agricultural Atlas as a go-to resource for policy makers, the public, and researchers to better understand California's specialty crops and regional food systems, and their intersection with urban land use and ecosystem services.

The Atlas will have two components: (1) a comprehensive repository of spatial data about California agriculture; and (2) a set of online outreach and analytical tools that engage the public and professionals with California agriculture issues and opportunities. The GIS-based repository will compile and integrate natural resource, ag industry, land use, climate, and socio-economic data from many agencies and researchers to facilitate unified, dynamic analysis of agriculture and food systems.

Our project will initially produce two online tools: (1) a web mapping interface that enables interactive data access to and visualization of our agricultural resources; and (2) an ag data toolkit that will inform and shape land use and transportation planning and climate change mitigation.

AgriCultural Roots Fair

SAGE developed the AgriCultural Roots Fair, featuring educational booths, ethnic food and dancing, and special programs for the Oakland and East Bay community.

This public festival and youth fair, produced by SAGE in 2002-2004, focused on celebrating and strengthening connections of cultures to the land, and connecting healthy food, families and farms. Over 1,500 students from 19 public schools were introduced to the bounty and beauty of Bay Area Agriculture, with farmland stations and hands-on activities that brought to life connections between Bay Area geography, agriculture, healthy eating and physical activity.
