Public Education & Outreach

Part of SAGE’s mission is to engage the public in sustainable agriculture. As we document and demonstrate the vital connections between land, resources, food and people, we inspire people to reclaim local food and natural resources.

SAGE achieves this through grant-funded projects to educate certain audiences about food and farming. We work with agencies, researchers, schools, youth and families, and provide services from school curriculums to annual fairs and events.

California Agricultural Atlas

The California Agricultural Almanac is an interactive web-based mapping portal that brings together information on local growing regions, crops, farms, markets, and farm-related events. The Almanac lets users dynamically explore local as well as statewide agriculture - find the regions where crops are produced, get details on crop seasons, discover farms (including up-close aerial views), and find out about markets and agricultural events. The Almanac draws data from partner organizations to offer a fresh and comprehensive picture of California's remarkable agriculture. The Almanac, developed by SAGE in collaboration with GreenInfo Network, and with funding from the California Department of Food and Agriculture, is currently in pilot form. Discussions are underway with various partners to significantly upgrade the real-time data delivery and inter-activity capacity of this promising tool. Visit California Agricultural Almanac Website

AgriCultural Roots Fair

SAGE developed the AgriCultural Roots Fair, featuring educational booths, ethnic food and dancing, and special programs for the Oakland and East Bay community.

This public festival and youth fair, produced by SAGE in 2002-2004, focused on celebrating and strengthening connections of cultures to the land, and connecting healthy food, families and farms. Over 1,500 students from 19 public schools were introduced to the bounty and beauty of Bay Area Agriculture, with farmland stations and hands-on activities that brought to life connections between Bay Area geography, agriculture, healthy eating and physical activity.
