SAGE is excited to introduce the California Agricultural Almanac, an interactive web-based mapping portal that for the first time brings together information on farming areas, crops, farms, markets and farm-related events. The Almanac lets you dynamically explore local as well as statewide agriculture - find the regions where crops are produced, get details on crop seasons, discover farms (including up-close aerial views), and find out about markets and agricultural events that you can participate in. In this initial release, the Almanac has more crop detail for the San Francisco Bay Area - the same details will be added to other parts of the state in the coming months.

The Cal Ag Almanac draws data from partner agricultural agencies and organizations to offer a fresh and comprehensive picture of California’s remarkable agriculture. The Almanac has been developed by Sustainable Agriculture Education (SAGE) in collaboration with GreenInfo Network with funding from the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Specialty Crop Block Grant fund (hence the initial focus on specialty crops; more types of production coming in future additions).

Check it out and give us feedback!

Education Programs Director
SAGE is seeking an experienced agricultural/environmental educator to manage and develop its education programs. The primary charge of the position is to continue development, implementation and fundraising for the Sunol Water Temple AgPark education programs for school children, youth, and the general public. A related charge is to manage beginning farmer education programs, in collaboration with agricultural agency partners. Farmed by four small farming enterprises, the Sunol AgPark is located on an 18-acre parcel in Sunol on land owned by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). By 2016, the SFPUC will complete construction of a full-facility Alameda Creek Watershed Center next to the AgPark.

The ideal candidate will have the skills, experience, and interest to undertake additional charges of the position: advising on the development of SAGE’s California Agricultural Almanac, an interactive, educational web-based mapping tool; advising on the development of education programs for future AgParks in the greater Bay Area; and contributing to other SAGE educational initiatives and projects. The position is supervised by the SAGE President, oversees the Sunol AgPark Education & Site Coordinator, and is supported by the SAGE Office Manager and interns.

Contract Teacher
SAGE is seeking one to two experienced agricultural/environmental educators to teach Farming in the Watershed curriculum to 4th - 8th grade classes at the Sunol AgPark. The curriculum, available to be viewed or downloaded at the SAGE website, has 18 lessons in 3 units all tied to California State Standards. Field trips generally run from 10 am to 1 pm and include an introductory farm tour and 1 or 2 lessons spaced around a snack/lunch break.

Farmed by four small farming enterprises, the Sunol AgPark is located on an 18-acre parcel in Sunol on land owned by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). Now that the farming enterprises are well established, SAGE is focusing on implementing education programs for target audiences: field trips for elementary school groups, service and project-based learning for middle and high school students and non-school youth groups, and work day, field days and tours for the general public.

Business Consultant
SAGE is looking for a consultant to develop a business plan and proposal for a second round of funding for our California Agricultural Almanac project, an interactive web-based mapping tool that lets users find where crops are produced and discover when they are in season. The Cal Ag Almanac also lets users discover farms and find markets, agricultural events and agritourism destinations throughout the state (the initial version of the Almanac is mainly focused on the Bay Area). The Cal Ag Almanac is currently a fully functioning beta website and we hope to launch the revised final version of it in 2012.
